Bio Vrummm

Good to see the big car companies get one stuck up em! A bunch of high school drop outs stealing the Phili car show with a 0-60 in 4 seconds bio diesel car.

Nice

The dog man may be back

Baby steps back into the dog man diesel arena are afoot too. Off to try out the stanlake bio diesel tomorrow, well Ant is filling my car with the stuff. Soon I shall be putting about the place smelling of roses or the bio version there of! More of this may be comming in the new year, we shall see.

DMD Stage 2 getting there

Batch number two is now done. Using 6g of caustic soda to 1ltr of methonol in 5ltrs of SVO (straight veg oil) seems to have done the trick.

Syphoned off the first real bio diesel leaving a good bunch of glycerine at the bottom. Time to find out how to make soap on a rope i guess.

Next up a 10ltr batch and figuring out how to wash this stuff (bubble air and water through the bio diesel). Then into the kebab van we go....

The low down on DMD

Ahh nothing like an after thought, a spot of back ground might be in order.

Bio Diesel, interesting stuff made from vegitable oil, animal fats, what ever you can get your hands on really. Stuff it into a diesel engine and off you go, well for a bit if your lucky. To be a bit more scientific about it a spot of processing can make the waste oils into a high grade fuel with plenty of interesting properties when compared to mineral oil based diesel.

Processing means adding a spot of methonol and caustic soda, heating a bit then seperating the resulting gloop, washing it with water and then drying it before stuffing it happily into your diesle engine tank for some happy motoring. Bio diesel attracts a duty of 27.1p/ltr which is 20p less than your general fuel duty. Add that to the possability of using chip fat costing bugger all and you should have an affordable and some what greener fuel.

http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_link.html has a whole bunch of interesting information.

Dog Man Diesel step 1

Dog Man Diesel, an adventure in bio engineering. Ant and me have gone in to the business of hanging around in garages, messing around with chemicals and creating crazy contraptions.

Ant & Dec

The first batch was a bit of an unknown quantity, I think it worked but not to its full potential. Fun though, the new 'plant' funished with plenty of zip ties seemed to do the trick for our first baby steps.

Our second batch has had a much more satisfactory result, we have seperation, glycerine and a spot of wax so fingers crossed with the washing.

Oh and a very special thanks to Philly for the white coats and rubber gloves ;)
